FOR YOU, WHO WANT TO BE A SUBTITLER, YOU CAN USE THESE SOFTWARE

1. Create and Edit Movie Subtitle with Aegisub

Do you want to learn to make a subtitle for a movie  or want to edit a messy downloaded subtitle? Then you can use Aegisub. Aegisub is one of video player-integrated subtitling applications. The function of this video player is to preview your work. But, by its default Aegisub will only show you the video, without the audio. To make the audio can be played, you must load the audio manually through Audio – Open Audio from Video menu. This application can be installed on Windows, Mac, and UNIX as well. And for Windows, there is the portable version too.

The supported video formats are .mkv, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov, .wmv, and .mp4 while the output file format is Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass). When we are typing the subtitle, we can determine the specific format for the text such as bold, italic, and colored. For the timing synchronization, we can use the playback function that can be controlled by keyboard with ease.

Generally, we can use Aegisub easily. Just access File – New Subtitle menu to create new subtitle, or File – Open to open existing subtitle file in the directory. The next step is to insert the video you want to add the subtitle to, through Video – Open Video menu. Then, follow it by opening the audio through Audio – Open Audio from Video.

2. Simple Subtitler with Wide Screen

divXLand Media Subtitler is an alternative subtitle maker, which is only 2 MB in size. Although it’s small in size, but it’s quite reliable to be used. One thing you should notice when it is being installed is that you will get error messages saying “Error ignored on start window initialization”. If you use Windows 7, make sure that you run the application under administrator rights. To do this stuff, just right click on your application shortcut then choose Run as administrator, so later the application will run smoothly. Although we just do this one for once, but the application will keep running smoothly in the future without any further error message.

Unlike any other subtitler software, divXLand Media Subtitler has a wide video preview window that so comfortable and make us easier to synchronize time track.

This application is able to import various video formats such as .mpg, .mpeg, .avi, .mkv, .divx, .xvid, .wmv, and .mp4. To give subtitle and do time synchronization, you can choose one of three available modes, they are press and hold (the duration of subtitle depends on the duration we press the associated button. This mode will be quite hard to be used for a video with a fast dialogue), manual mode (the duration of subtitle can be set manually), and preview mode (only to preview the result).

3. Subtitler for Real Professionals

Subtitle Workshop is one of subtitler applications used by professionals. Both of the “original” subtitle and the translated one can be saved for later use.

In running this application, we can choose Time and Frames mode. It means that we can synchronize the subtitle based on the time or frame numbers (in what seconds or what frames the subtitle will appear). Generally, we will be more comfort to use the Time mode since it’s easier to determine the duration. If we want to use Frame mode, we have to be able to convert the subtitle duration needed based on the video’s frame rates. For example: we have 25 fps video and in a particular scene, we want to put 3 seconds subtitle. So, there we need 75 frames for subtitle. It’s so different than using Time mode where we just put 00:00:03.000 in duration column.

Almost all of popular video formats can be imported to this application and the subtitle produced can be exported into 56 types of popular subtitle format including the standard subtitle for film industry and karaoke lyrics. Besides that, we can do batch conversion to convert various type of subtitle formats into our favorite output format. This 1 MB application can be downloaded from http://www.urusoft.net/.

4. Subtitler with Google Translate Support

Among the subtitler applications above, Jubler is the simplest one. But, unlike the others, Jubler’s installation is quite “difficult” since it doesn’t have integrated built-in video player. So that why we have to download and install the video player called MPlayer manually. Not only that, after the installation is completed, Jubler cannot detect MPlayer directly. For the first time use, Jubler will ask for MPlayer location / directory when we try to import a video. If the automatic search feature unable to locate the MPlayer directory, then we must load MPlayer manually from Program Files (C – Program Files – MPlayer for Windows – MPlayer.exe). Besides we have to install MPlayer, we also need to install Java Runtime Environment.

Although Jubler is little bit uncomfortable to be used because of its stand-alone video player doesn’t dock well, it still good to have a try because one of its superiority is integrated with Google Translate, so it will be helpful to make multi-language subtitle.

Jubler can import various video and audio types. The default duration of subtitle is 2 seconds and it’s possible to extend it as needed. The subtitle text also can be adjusted with some parameters, such as the font type and size, and the color. We just need to activate Display Font Attributes and Display Color Attributes mode by clicking the associated button in the bottom left corner of Jubler window.

Jubler can save up to 12 subtitle variants. So, it should be more than “enough” for daily and professional use.
