english debateLast Tuesday (October 19th) was my first day in teaching English extracurricular program again in SMA N 1 Bukateja. That day, I was asked to build a debating team for SMA N 1 Bukateja. I think it was a good idea because I have experience in building debating team in the same school for about 3 years ago. And for me, with a debating activity, students will be more active in speaking and reading, and will increase their listening skill too. So, what is “debating” I mean here?

Debating championship is a trend in Banyumas regency and usually be held by university such as UNSOED (Universitas Jenderal Soedirman). This debating championship is proposed to senior high school and vocational senior high school. And in Banyumas regency, we use Australasian Parliamentary System for the debate.

“Debate” is about developing your communication skills, assembling and organizing effective arguments, persuading and entertaining an audience, and using your voice and gestures to convince an adjudicator that your arguments outweigh your oppositions. Debating is not about personal abuse, irrational attacks, or purely emotional appeals.

A debate is held between two teams of three members each. These two teams will be referred as the affirmative (government, proposition) and the negative (opposition). Members of each team are assigned positions as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd speakers. Teams are given 30 minutes to prepare for each debate. Each of the speakers will deliver a substantial speech of 7 minutes duration and either the 1st or the 2nd speaker on both sides will deliver the reply speeches for the teams. Reply speeches will be 5 minutes.

And generally, the affirmative team must define the motion and support this by giving constructive arguments. On the other hands, the negative team must oppose the motion and build a counter case against the government. Download the debating guideline here.

To Sam: Sure, I will up load the file you need soon.

To Bu Ari: I don’t have any idea at the moment. I think, we still can use the last club name (SPEC) so we do not need to find another name.

To Tia: That’s right. SPEC is the best name for english club in SMA N 1 Bukateja.

    To Shynta: tengkyu…..
