USE CONVERSATION DIARY TO SHARPEN WRITING AND SPEAKING SKILL OF YOUR STUDENTS


writingIn developing students’ abilities in English, especially in writing and speaking, we can apply what we call it as “Conversation Diary”. It is a kind of a diary that can be used for exercise, more than a homework. In my college, I learned more about English through “Conversation Diary” or we called it as CD. It was one of campus’ programs to develop students’ skill in English. The campus gave us two CD books (each CD has 20 topics) to be filled with our opinion about many things such as “doing cosmetic surgery, is it good?” or other topics, then we should retell our composition / opinions to “Contact Person” or we call it as CP. They were English lecturers, campus’ staffs, or senior students who competent enough in English. They would listen to our explanation about the topic and gave us questions related with the topic. It’s a “small thing”, but it was very useful and effective to help us in learning English. Because, we “were forced” to practice our English (especially to speak up) and CP always help us to correct the mistakes in our composition. They gave correction about writing, pronouncing, and organizing our composition for each topic.

As a reference, I enclosed some notes about CD that was applied in my college:

Instructions For Students:

  1. Put your ideas (make a composition) on every topic provided on each page of this Conversation Diary (CD) not less than 10 sentences.
  2. See the Contact Person (CP), then give your CD to CP.
  3. Retell your composition without reading the text (ask the CP to listen your retelling).
  4. The CP will give you questions based on your ideas on the topic. You must answer the questions.
  5. After giving you questions, the CP will put his / her signature on your CD.
  6. The lecturer will always monitor your score to your composition, and take it as element of your final score.

Regulation:

  1. No service for less than 10 sentences of ideas / composition.
  2. No signature given to passive students.
  3. The service must be done outside the classroom.
  4. The students are supposed to finish 10 first topics for mid test.
  5. The students are supposed to finish minimum 15 topics for final test. Less than 15 are not allowed to take final test, but will be given “Make up Test” done separately after final test and consequently the test score of “Make up Test” will be reduced 10 points.
  6. The maximum achievement of CD score will be accumulated with other scores.
